Creating a Cozy Living Area in a Basement

We recently completed a major remodel in our basement, which included updating the living room area. Prior to the renovation, we spent zero time down there because it was dark, cold, and uninviting. My main goal when creating this space was to make a cozy area where we could hang out as a family or entertain friends.

I am sharing tips on how to make your basement space cozy, bright, and inviting.

Let's revisit how this space looked before we started. If you scare easily, you may want to scroll past these pictures...they are pretty bad! Before, the space was dark, cold, and uninviting, (therefore unused) with low ceilings, cheap paneling on the walls, jail bars, and a defunct kitchenette area.

After many months of hard work, sweat, and tears, we now have a space to entertain in or just hang out in, that does not even really feel like a basement! Here is what it looks like now! Keep reading for some of my tips on how we achieved this bright, yet cozy space.

5 Ways to Create a Cozy Living Space:

1. Use tranquil, light colors

We opted for a light gray on the walls, white ceiling and trim, and light colored vinyl plank flooring to keep the space bright and inviting.

2. Have various types of lighting

We installed eight can lights that are on a dimmer, so you do not have to have full brightness all the time. The addition of table or floor lamps can also bring a cozy element to the room and give options for less light.

3. Use texture in cozy blankets and throw pillows

I have a basket with fleece blankets to throw over your legs while watching TV. Being in the basement, it is usually cooler down there than the rest of the house, so it is important to have warm textiles in fleece, knit, or quilts.

4. Add reflective surfaces such as mirrors

Mirrors brightens up a room and makes it look larger, while doubling as pretty wall decor. You can also find mirrored trays or vases to add interest to your coffee table. Mirrors are a great option to incorporate into a gallery wall...which is on my project list for this space.

5. Layer rugs on the floor

Hard wood, laminate, and tile can make the space feel cold, especially in a basement. The addition of a rug gives a layer of warmth under your feet and adds another aspect of coziness in the room.

How do you add a feeling of coziness to your home?

  1. I have to say my favorite part is the ceiling! I think I need to do something like this in our basement. It is finished, but it just seems dark and uninviting. Plus, it is always cold down there. Love this space!

    1. Thank you! We love the ceiling too, and the trey detail actually was a necessity to hide pipes/ductwork and let us keep a high ceiling.

  2. I am honestly in shock. THIS IS FABULOUS!! I can't believe how much was done and how beautiful it looks! Of course, I have no clue how to decorate a space, but your tips are pretty helpful.

    1. Thank you Ashley! Looking back at the pictures, it is hard to believe all the work we did! I am not the best at decorating and this space is still a work in progress but it is 1000% better!
