This week is all about the prep work and finishing up our supply purchases. It is crazy how much work goes into to demo and prep before you can start putting the room back together! Here is what it looked like when I updated you last week:
Since my husband and I work full time, our only full day to work on things is Saturday. So last Saturday we rented a truck so we could go pick up the custom made butcher block counter tops, along with the plywood needed to make the new doors for the cabinets. We also purchased a new sink and microwave. My 18 year old son went with us for muscle, because those butcher block counters are no joke! It was fun to see him involved in the process of picking out elements for the kitchen. I thought he would be bored, but he was into it...and budget conscious (like his mama!) Unfortunately, they did not have the faucet or oven hood that we wanted in stock, so we had to order those online, but they should be here later this week.
I removed all of the cabinet doors and filled in all the holes (at least 1,000!) with wood putty, since we are using difference hardware. After the putty had time to dry, I sanded it smooth using a wood block. The plastic with painters tape came in handy to keep the dust off our dishes and appliances while sanding, since we still have to use this kitchen.
I also gave my glass canisters and a basket a colorful update. I was inspired by this project from PMQ for Two, who is also doing her kitchen for the One Room Challenge.
I started sanding and sealing the 3 pieces of butcher block, which is a process since you have to seal both sides and all edges, letting it dry overnight between coats. I will be sharing the entire sealing and installation process later if you are interested.
I should be able to clean and paint the cabinets this weekend, since we have an extra day off for Easter. I hope you come back to see the update on my kitchen progress next week. We only have 3 weeks left...do you think we can pull it off?!
Looking so good! You're almost through the tough part and getting to the pretty. So excited!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Susie...I am starting to get nervous, but my hubby thinks we can make it!
DeleteI love the plan and that butcher block is going to be so nice. Can't wait to see how everything comes together. It's going to be such a fun space!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I am excited about the butcher block. It is looking so good already!
DeleteYou're making great progress! Your kitchen's going to be so cute and I can't wait to see how it turns out.
ReplyDeleteYou are too kind, Emy. I feel like I am so behind, but it is coming together.
DeleteThis is quite the project, Mary! I can't wait to see all the cabinets painted. Good luck with the next update!
ReplyDeleteIt really is! The hubby thinks we can finish...I sure hope so. Thanks for your encouragement!
DeleteFilling holes and sanding is the most boring/tedious part! What did you use to seal the butcher block?
ReplyDeleteYes, its terrible...and so dusty! We are using John Boos and Co EZ-Do since it is food safe. I hope to have a whole post devoted to the counter tops after the ORC is over.
DeleteIt is looking great so far, at least the hard part is almost done now it is on to the fun stuff.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I will be happier when we start putting it back together!
DeleteIt's fun when the kids show an interest! My son also likes choosing design elements. Can't wait to see your countertops finished
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he got involved! The counter tops are going to look so good!
DeleteWow that is so exciting! There's so much happening and I find it so admirable you're getting that much done on just Saturdays!
ReplyDeleteThere is a lot happening even though it feels like it isn't getting any better. But the pieces will fall into place!
DeleteCan’t wait to see the final space!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It will be so much better than what we had!
DeleteWow! You've got a lot on your plate, but you're getting to the fun part! Can't wait to see how it turns out. Hope your 3 day weekend was productive.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Robin! We had a productive weekend and are starting to put things back together, so that's good!
DeleteLooking good and I'm excited to see the reveal.
