Updating A Guest Bedroom On A Budget

I do not know about you, but the guest bedroom in our house is one of the last rooms I thought about decorating, because we rarely have overnight guests.  It was a mishmash of our "extra" furniture, and none of it matched.  Early last year, my teenage son was complaining he was outgrowing his twin bed (How did he get to be almost 6' tall???)  It was not really in the budget to buy a new bed and mattress set, so I decided we would just move the queen sized bed from our guest room into his bedroom. This left me with a blank canvas to work with in the guest bedroom.  Since I had a minimal budget, I decided to shop my house.

Most of us probably have furniture that has been passed down to us from our parents or other relatives.  It is usually in good shape, just not the right style or color.  We had an orangey wood, four-poster bedroom set downstairs that belonged to my husband's grandmother.  So, I decided I would use the bed in the guest bedroom, along with the 1-drawer table that matched it.  I figured I could paint it and the oak 2-drawer chest, that was handed down to me, the same color to make it work in the space.  I browsed Pinterest to get some ideas and I found similar style tables HERE and HERE that were painted.

We moved the bed upstairs and then I got ready to paint the two small side tables.  I had a coupon for a free sample of Valspar paint, so I decided on a grayish-brown color called English Tea Party.  I removed the hardware because I was going to replace it, and took the drawers out. After lightly sanding both pieces, I primed them with one coat of my standard Kilz Primer.  It took two coats of the English Tea Party paint on both pieces, so I ended up needing another one of the sample sizes of paint to finish the project.  Once the paint was dry, I attached the new pulls I purchased.

For the two-drawer chest, I decided on a simple Liberty satin nickle pull that was $2.

For the one-drawer side table, I actually took a knob off one of the cabinets that are in our basement kitchenette, since we will be tearing out the cabinets as part of our basement renovation.  You can find a similar style HERE for less than $2.

To finish the space, I used the Tommy Hilfiger bedspread I already had and added some cute Cynthia Rowley pillow shams (aff link) I found on Clearance at TJMaxx, for around $10.  I then used a couple of throw pillows that were in the top of my linen closet and a quilt my grandmother had made for me, to finish off the new look.

The result is a cozy and cohesive bedroom that is ready for guests and I spent less than $25!
