We finished building most of the walls (
the ones with plumbing), so the plumber was able to come back and finish running the plumbing lines in the wall and we also started running electrical. My husband is actually pretty handy in the electrical department, but we want to make sure everything is up to code. So, he helped my friend's son, who is a licensed electrician, run all the wires and put in the new fixtures.
We also needed to have the tub/shower in place when the plumbers came back out...this meant we needed to go shopping! Since we have a small budget, we headed over to our local
Re-Store, which is run by Habitat For Humanity. This place is amazing! They carry a little bit of everything you could possibly need for your home, from furniture, to windows and doors, to hardware. I could have spent days looking around, but we had a list that we needed to stick to.

We found a like new tub/shower combo ($75), a double hung window ($75) and a full view exterior door ($50) for our mudroom area, and a toilet ($45). We also visited a local salvage company and found a pre-hung interior door for the bathroom and a slab along with hardware that we will use for a sliding door for the laundry room for $68.
This day will go down as the best score ever and also the most nerve wrecking car ride
EVER! We were hoping we would be able to lay the shower flat in our trailer, but of course it was a little too wide, so, it had to ride standing upright. We used plenty of straps to tie it down and it seemed really sturdy, but once we got on the road, it started shifting and rocking.
(So, this is the point where I keep it real....I started freaking out...telling my husband to slow down repeatedly, when he wasn't even going the speed limit.) I was so worried it was going to tip over, take the trailer with it and wreck our truck (
overreact much?) It was the longest 15 minutes of my life!!!! We made it home safely and never spoke about it again...until now. Moving on.....
We were able to set the shower combo in place and build a partial wall at the end of it, so the plumbing could be attached.

The plumbing was also ran in the walls for the washing machine and utility sink in the laundry room and for the sink and toilet in the bathroom.

My husband and our friend installed the bathroom fan, vanity fixture, and can light over the shower. They also ran wiring in both the bathroom and laundry rooms for the outlets and cleaned up most of the electrical mess apparently done by the previous owners.

It is so exciting to see the rooms starting to take shape, with the walls, the fixtures, plumbing, and electrical going in. I know we still have a long way to go, but I can now see our vision coming to life!

DeleteYou are really making progress! I would definitely be that paranoid person with my husband too! I do it even if we don't have anything breakable in the car that need to remain upright! Haha!

ReplyDeleteWe are just in the middle of the move (rented property - England) but considering moving back to where we used to live (Northern Ireland) to our lovely & cozy house. Ironically we saw the one opposite is up on the market so we might be selling our wee one & putting an offer for a bigger one (future purposes - family growing and stuff). But will see what happens :) So many changes!
P.S. Thankful for your continuous prayers for my husband, my lovely. Houses and all that is important but when it comes to health & well-being of the ones we love to bits, there's nothing more important than that. Trusting God everything will be just fine <3

DeleteThe idea of renovations makes me so nervous. It seems like there is so much that goes into it....from the stressful car ride from the supply store to the installation, it's so daunting. Way to go you for tackling such a huge project!
