Our house is a 1960's rancher, so we have designed our front living area in the Mid-Century Modern style to pay homage to the home's original era. My husband loves searching on ebay and craigslist for funky MCM finds to add to the living room decor.
A while back, he found a magazine rack/ashtray online and it has been hidden away in our basement junk room during our basement reno. It really is a cool piece and would be the perfect addition to the living room to use as a side table.
The top of the rack (the ashtray/cupholder/cigarette holder) is made of ceramic and has a funky green geometric swirl pattern on it. The magazine rack part is a perforated metal that was rusty looking. We kind of liked the patina, but ultimately decided to spruce it up a bit with metallic paint.
First I used a scouring sponge and solution of detergent and water to clean it. Once dry, I sprayed it with two coats of Rust-Oleum Gold Metallic spray paint, letting it dry in between coats.
Once dry, I put the ceramic tray back on top of it and placed it in the living room to use as a handy side table.
What piece have you given new life to with spray paint?
