Updating a Wooden Tray with Faux Leather

Do you like to use trays in your home decor? They are perfect for creating vignettes, corralling small items, or using on top of an ottoman to hold drinks. We probably all have a wooden tray around that could use an update. I am joining with Curly Crafty Mom and Sweet Parrish Place today to share three ideas on how to update a basic tray!

This teak tray was my husband's before we got married. The handles broke off years ago, and I have been using it on top of a basket as a makeshift side table. I knew this would be the perfect candidate to fix up, since the wood is in great shape. I decided to add hardware on the sides to use as handles and make a faux leather inlay, since I couldn't bear to paint over this wood.

Supplies:

Wooden Tray
(2) drawer pulls
Palm sander
Stain - I used Deco Art Chocolate
Cricut Explore (or other cutting machine)
Faux Leather

Preparing the Tray

Step 1:  Since the handles had broken off, I needed to sand the surface to make the edge smooth.

Step 2: I then applied a little stain along the edge to try to even out the color where I sanded the wood.

Step 3: I drilled holes in the sides and attached the pulls using the hardware provided in the set.

Making the Faux Leather Insert

Step 1: I created a monogram design in the Cricut Design Space software and made it almost as large as the tray.

Step 2: I used the machine to cut the circle monogram from the faux leather, then removed the leather I was using from the mat.

Step 3: Lay it in the tray and secure it with adhesive.

This tray is ready to be put to good use as a landing area for keys, change, and such or to use to serve drinks when entertaining!

  2. What an adorable tray! I was going to put drawer pulls on mine and then I realized there are cut outs on each side, so I had to scratch that idea. But, I love them on trays! This turned out so nice!

  4. I love using trays but I’ve never personalized them, what a great idea. Your tray turned out great Mary, I have a Cricut but haven’t used it in awhile. It might be time to dust mine off.
