DIY Mudroom Bench (One Room Challenge) - Week 4

I am back with my progress on my mudroom. If you are just joining me, I am a guest participant in the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda at Calling It Home. We are in week 4 of a 6 week renovation and have been making steady progress on the Mudroom bench and built in cabinet.

Mudroom Built-ins

This week we cut the boards for the bench seat and the dividers underneath the bench. We used scrap wood that we had on hand from shelving that we ripped out of the garage. Sure, it would have been easier to just use plywood instead of ripping down these shelves, but it was free! Also, since the bench will be hidden by a cushion, it really did not need to be pretty.

Here is the "dry fit" before I painted everything and added the front trim piece.

I used one of the samples of paint we bought when deciding on house colors to paint the bench top and dividers with. I am all about using the sample jars of paint for projects and sometimes you can find "oops" ones for less than $1 at the home improvement store. The color I used was Behr Marquee in Gotham Gray in a matte finish.

After painting all the pieces, my hubby attached the face trim to the front of the bench using wood glue and finish nails.

We then attached the bench to the frame using screws.

We slid the dividers into the "slots" we screwed into the underside of the bench and nailed them in.

We also added drywall to the side of the closet and trimmed out the window.

This week, our goal is to trim out the door (and finish the window), paint the closet, and add the door and hardware to the closet. I am also going to DIY a coat rack out of a piece of molding and coat hooks.

  1. Your bench looks great-and I love that you went with a color instead of white. My mudroom is my favorite room in my house, I don't know what I would do without all of that storage. Can't wait to see your finished ORC! :) Kristin @ Postbox Designs
