Rustic Wooden Snowflake Sign

I think I have an obsession with snowflakes, since my last few projects have used them in some way. I use a lot of snowmen in my Christmas decor, so snowflakes obviously fit right in. Since I have another mantle to decorate this year in the basement, I have had to pull out all of the decor I own and get crafty as well. To compliment the snowman theme, I decided to use scrap wood, paint, and vinyl to make a Rustic Wooden Snowflake Sign.

When we installed the cedar closet in our basement, we had a pile of scrap pieces left over that we did not want to throw away. We planned on using them in projects and I thought they would be the perfect size for a rustic sign.

I used 4 planks and put them together using the tongue and groove. I then took 2 shorter planks and glued them to the back of the sign vertically for stability and clamped it until the glue had dried. Next I painted the sign with a coat of Rust-Oleum Gold Metallic spray paint.

While I was waiting for the paint to dry, I headed over to my Cricut and opened the Design Space on my laptop to find a snowflake pattern for a stencil. I found one that was not too intricate and copied the design in several sizes.

After cutting and weeding the snowflakes, I used Transfer Tape to apply them to the sign in a random pattern.

I intended on using a white spray paint for the top coat, but my cans were clogged. (because someone...ME...did not clean them properly before storing them) Anyhoo, on to plan B because that's what I do, so I went back to my paint closet. I found a pale blue that I used on my ombre bistro set and decided that would look pretty with the metallic. I sprayed a couple of thin coats over the entire sign and let dry for an entire day because I did not want to take the chance of messing up the paint when pulling off the vinyl stencils.

I carefully removed the vinyl snowflake stencils with the help of my Cricut tools, then lightly sanded the entire surface to give it a little bit of a distressed look.

It is the perfect addition to my snowman themed mantle! What do you think?

  2. Obsessed with the color you chose! It's one of my favorite! Also was thinking how it would be nice to use the scraps as a photo back drop :) for flatlays and such!
