Creating an Organized Craft Space in a Small Area

I am partnering with Oriental Trading to bring you tips on organizing your craft supplies. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I am back with the third post in my Home Organization Series, with tips on Creating an Organized Craft Space in a Small Area. I do not have an extra room in my house to devote to crafting, so I am stealing a corner in the basement to turn into a crafting nook. Previously, I had my craft supplies in totes and would craft on the dining room table, which was not optimal.

This was what the corner looked like before I started...

I was lucky enough to be gifted a drafting table that my Mother-in-Law was no longer using. It is the perfect size for my Cricut machine with space left for crafting. I ended up taking the tray off of the side to make more room. I also bought a metal rolling cart from Michael's for $30, using a gift card. We had a melamine shelf on hand that we were not using, so I hung it above the desk using some basic white brackets that were about $5 from Home Depot. I was able to find pretty much everything I needed to organize my crafting supplies from Oriental Trading in the Storage Options under Teaching Supplies.

Tips On Organizing Supplies

Separate all your crafting supplies into piles by type so you can see what you have. I just spread everything out on the floor and organized one pile at a time.

Use the appropriate sized container for your craft supplies. I used large, round containers to store my smaller supplies such as washi tape, ribbon, and faux flowers. I used a wire mesh storage bin to hold my pom pom maker and yarn supplies and selection of glue dots.

These transparent folders are perfect for organizing my scraps of vinyl. They can be separated by type: regular vinyl, permanent vinyl, window cling, etc.

Until I find a better option, I am storing my Cricut rolls of vinyl and transfer tape standing up in a fabric box I found at TJMaxx. I used a pretty ceramic cup to hold all of my Cricut tools. I used a clear Command hook to hang my Cricut cutting mats underneath the shelf.

Organizing a Metal Rolling Cart

There are so many ways to organize materials on the rolling cart with the three shelves. On the bottom shelf, I put my random craft bits, like scrap felt, wooden letters and shapes, pom poms, etc in small plastic boxes with lids.

On the middle shelf, I am storing my rolls of iron on vinyl, holographic vinyl, and faux leather. On the top shelf, I store my small acrylic paints, Mod Podge and a wire mesh storage bin filled with my pom pom maker and yarn.

  1. I am going to pin this! I just love your small crafting space and I need this in my home. I also love that little container on the table where you keep all of your vinyl rolled up!
