Llama Painted Canvas Wall Decor

One of my friends is pregnant with her first child and the nursery theme is llamas. If you have been on Pinterest or social media at all, you will know that the llama trend is going strong, so I jumped at the chance to make something for her! I asked her to send pics of her nursery for inspiration and once I saw the brightly colored animal prints she picked, I had to do something along those lines. I had an 8x10" canvas on hand, so I decided to get out my paint and Cricut machine and go to work!

First, I had to decide whether to paint or stencil the canvas or leave it white. The white background seemed so plain with the bright colors in the nursery, so I practiced painting a print that mimicked her rocker fabric, on a piece of card stock and liked the result.

Painting the Canvas

I mixed a little orange RIT dye in with white acrylic paint from Plaid Crafts and also used a Teal shade from DecoArt to make the pattern. I used pom poms dipped in the paint to make a random dot pattern all over the canvas, overlapping some of the dots. Once the paint dried, I covered the entire canvas with a coat of Mod Podge. I read that when using adhesive vinyl with canvas, it sticks to the surface much easier if it is painted.

Creating the Vinyl Llamaste Design

I opened the Cricut Design space and searched for "llama" and selected a free llama design. I sized it to fit on the area of the canvas. I inserted a text box and typed in "llamaste," which is a play on Namaste since she teaches yoga. I selected a cursive font and adjusted the letter spacing until the letters came together. I made the word a different color than the llama so I could cut it on 2 mats. I decided to use a tan for the llama and a teal blue for the word, which coordinated with the painted background. Follow the instructions on the screen to cut both designs on the mats and weed the un-needed vinyl to leave the design. I always use transfer tape and a scraper tool to apply the vinyl to the project because it keeps everything together and lined up.

Finally, I added an additional touch of whimsy with colorful pom poms attached with glue dots. Make It Now in Cricut Design Space!
