Getting Started in Bible Journaling Using a Journal

The journal was provided to me by DaySpring to review, but all opinions are my own.

There are many ways to study scripture and one of the ways I like to dive in to the Word is through journaling. It allows me to focus on the passage and be creative in the process which helps me retain what I am reading. Even if you do not have a Journaling Bible, you can still get creative while studying scripture.

This Devotional Doodle Journal is the perfect place to start if you do not know where to start. It offers a short devotional with lines for journaling and a prompt page to doodle on. The one I started with (shown below) was the simple task of drawing stars.

The Journal also has a lay flat cover for easy use, a ribbon bookmark to save your place, and non-bleed paper so you can use markers or Sharpies.

If you are new to Journaling, the first rule is there are NO rules! Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Use stamps and stickers to add shapes and words
  • Jot down the verse or part of the passage that spoke to you
  • Draw or doodle a design to illustrate the verse

How to Bible Journal without a Journaling Bible

  1. One of the easiest ways to get started in Bible journaling is by taking an appointment with God and writing him a letter or note every day for twenty weeks. The note should simply say that you are interested in keeping a journal, has a lot of things you would like to keep in your journal and that you would like God's help in keeping it. When you get this letter, you can start to write back as if you were writing from your heart. If you find that you have been writing about something, then you can add your thoughts as a personal journal entry.

Keeping a journal can be as personal or anonymous as you like. Some people like to keep their journals completely private. You could even take an appointment with God and talk about what you want to keep in your journal. It could be a time of healing or spiritual growth and you could share that as well.

Once you get started in Bible journaling, you might find that it is something else that you can continue to do each week or every other week. Sometimes we may feel like we have to stop for awhile and then catch up, but it should never stop you in any way. Instead of trying to get back to what you were doing before you became unproductive, use your journal to catch up on what you need to do and then move on. Remember that God is helping you through this time, so use that to your advantage and don't let a lack of productivity stop you from keeping in contact with Him.
